About

Sorrel Penelo is an emerging British artist living and working in Porto, Portugal.

This first body of work, entitled Pre-phase, is Penelo’s initial investigation into material, form, technique and concept. Each piece contains its own journey with the potential of further expansion and development, the starting point always drawing or photograph.

Penelo has continued a theme which has long been an area of focus, in which she contemplates the very personal and unique exchange between person and place. Through her practice she reflects on her own, sometimes complex and ambiguous, relationship with her surroundings both current and in retrospect. She considers how this can transform experientially and emotionally, subtly or at other times significantly as a result of external, circumstantial or psychological shifts and changes.

Penelo grew up on the British island of Guernsey, 48km off the North West coast of France. Moving away at 18 years old she gained a First Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Applied Arts at the University of Wales; she then continued her creative practice in screen printing and drawing in Bristol, UK; Hải Phòng, Viet Nam and Hồ Chí Minh City, Viet Nam. On returning to the UK she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Design for Visual Communication at LCC, University of the Arts London where she continued to live and work professionally as a Graphic Designer. Penelo now lives in Portugal where she is a full time practicing artist as well as a mother.
