Pre-phase

Combi Coffee Roasters, Rua Prof. Augusto Nobre 451A, 4150-119, Porto, Portugal

05/10 - 20/12

An interest in place and the multifaceted relationships we have with it, is at the core of my practice. Although often over looked or eclipsed by the day to day, how we interact with our surroundings both physically and emotionally, I believe is unique to each of us. The very personal memories we carry of significant locales, the shift in our sensorial experience as somewhere moves from foreign to familiar, the underlying narratives and systems that lie dormant in the fabric of our surroundings have all contributed to this body work.

The title of this exhibition, 'Pre-phase', is an acknowledgement towards the work to come, this subject matter holds incredible scope for exploration and so I see this show as the crucial prologue.

These pieces have been created for a restful space, to be amongst and in the presence of. They are exhibited in a selected location that people come to; to work quietly and communally; to converse between or, simply, to be.

Their construction is measured, not always clear of the direction the piece will take is important, engaging in materials and responding to what is unfolding in front of me has been fundamental to my practice. Layer upon layer of pre-used paper collected from family members, built on frames of locally made rope or recycled cardboard packaging, and finished with beeswax, powdered marble, bookmakers thread and watercolour. Their delicacy requires an interior space, away from the elements they are contemplating.
